Workwear Jeans: A Timeless Staple

Durable, comfortable, and resistant to frequent washing, jeans have been a go-to workwear item for over 150 years. They are one of the most widely used and recognized garments across various industries—and beyond. Throughout the 20th century, jeans and other denim clothing have made their way into everyone's wardrobes.

A Brief History of Work Jeans

Is it true that jeans originated in Genoa? While it might not be literally accurate, it's highly likely that the ancestor of today's denim was a robust, economical blue fustian fabric produced in parts of Liguria, Piedmont, and nearby France as early as the 15th century. This fabric was exported from the port of Genoa.

Initially used to cover goods during sea voyages and to make sturdy pants for Genoese sailors, this blue fabric might have given rise to the term "blue jeans," derived from "bleu de Gênes," meaning "blue of Genoa." The fabric also reached Genoa from the nearby French city of Nîmes, possibly giving us the word "denim."

This early denim was not considered suitable for formal wear, partly due to its uneven indigo dye, which was inexpensive but prone to fading. However, its durability, low cost, and flexible weave made it ideal for workwear, both in Europe and overseas, where it was spread by maritime trade.

The modern jeans we know today were born in the United States during the 19th-century Gold Rush, thanks to the technical and entrepreneurial efforts of tailor Jacob Davis and merchant Levi Strauss. Using blue cotton fabric from Genoa, Davis designed work pants that were robust, allowed for freedom of movement, offered better protection during heavy labor, and featured metal rivets at stress points to prevent tearing. These pants quickly became the uniform of frontier workers: loggers, miners, railroad workers, farmhands, gold prospectors, and cowboys.

By the late 1800s, the term "jeans" had become synonymous with work pants, a status it maintained until the late 1940s. Post-World War II, with the presence of the American military in Europe, jeans began to be worn casually for leisure activities.

In the following decades, jeans' popularity soared. They became an identity marker for youth and subcultures, then more mainstream, worn by people of all ages, genders, and social classes. Eventually, denim even entered the fashion world. Despite this rapid rise, jeans and denim remained firmly rooted in their origins: workwear.

Why We Still Use Workwear Jeans

Even with the availability of modern, high-performance technical fabrics, work jeans remain a favorite choice for many workers across various sectors and tasks, from hands-on jobs to office work.

Denim still retains the qualities that historically made it the "work fabric": it withstands wear and frequent washing, is durable, and now, with a small percentage of elastane fibers, is even more comfortable.

Stretch work jeans allow for free movement while maintaining a sleek, modern fit. For example, Diadora Utility's classic stone-washed Pant Stone models come with a hammer loop and tape measure holder or as Cargo versions with side pockets.

Cotton denim is breathable and, in its lighter versions, perfect for making summer work pants. The Pant Stone Light line includes summer work jeans in Cargo style with six pockets (including a side zip pocket) and a lightweight denim cargo bermuda for those who don't need full leg protection at work.

Jeans are still typically blue, but today they are also available in various colors like black or gray and a wide range of washes that give different finishes and styles. The washing process involves immersing the denim in water to shrink it in width and height, ensuring it doesn't change size with subsequent washes. Standard washing produces a uniformly colored jean, but adding pumice stone, bleaching agents, or light over-dyeing can create special effects like Stone Washed, Bleached, or Dirty washes.

Finally, a decisive factor in the popularity of work jeans is their versatility. They are suitable for leisure activities and can be worn outside of work without looking like you're in uniform.
